And your first Atlantic City fun fact at that.

In the game of golf, the term “birdie” (to score a hole under par) was coined right here at the Atlantic City Country Club. It happened at the twelfth fairway too.  (A twofer for you!). In 1903.

1903, see?

We are totes serious.

One of Abner Smith’s golf buddies exclaimed that he made a “bird of a shot” when his ball landed right next to the hole.

“Bird of a shot” soon became “birdie”, a term that became trendy at the ACCC. Visiting members then took the word to their own clubs and it spread (like wildfire, obviously).

So stick that one in your back pockets in case you need it for your next game of quizzo….or something.
