Do you have a holiday break approaching? Who is about to party it up this Aqua Friday at The Pool After Dark at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City? (One of the few clubs open in AC this weekend, btw). If so, DJ Johnny B will be cranking out those hot beats for ya! And if you’re big on Tri-State area nightlife, chances are that you’ve probably danced around to his sounds before. He’s also performed live on-air with Wired 96.5, Q102 and My106.1 in Philadelphia.

Anyway, DJ Johnny B is a cool, down to earth guy and has some interesting tales to tell. Check out his story, below.

DJ Johnny B

TAC: What made you start spinning twelve years ago?

DJ Johnny B: I’ve always loved all types of music.  I have a guilty pleasure for popular music too.  I used to spend whatever money I earned on music.  I still do to this day.  I became interested in spinning after seeing DJ Jazzy Jeff perform one night.  Around this time, a few friends of mine had started spinning private parties and I would tag along.  I eventually met Frank Catrambone of Center Stage Entertainment and he helped make it possible for me to go out on gigs on my own.  I fell in love with the way people react to songs before I started spinning and I have to say that is my favorite aspect of rocking a party.

TAC: How would you describe your DJ persona?

DJ Johnny B: I don’t have a DJ persona.  Many DJs do, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It works quite well for some of them.  I probably should create a DJ persona, but that’s not me.  I’m actually very shy and standoffish. My DJ name is my first name and the initial of my last name.  I’m just a regular guy who likes to play music and make people dance.

TAC: What do you think makes you different from other DJs in Atlantic City?

DJ Johnny B: I pride myself on being professional.  To me that means always arriving early, being prepared for any situation, and staying focused on keeping the crowd dancing and buying drinks.  I’m also able to spin marathon sets without repeating songs.

TAC: You spin open format music. What kind of playlist works best for The Pool After Dark crowd?

DJ Johnny B: The Pool After Dark is the biggest room around, so it’s important to keep the energy high. I play hit songs all night, old and new.  I play Dance, Hip Hop, Pop, R&B, and Reggae.  If the crowd is responding to one genre better than another, I’ll stick with that.  I try to mix it up all night.

TAC: What do you like about most about spinning at The Pool After Dark?

DJ Johnny B: It’s the biggest place in Atlantic City and the energy is always amazing.  I love palm trees too.

TAC: Us too, us too. Finish the sentence: Any time I want to really rev up the crowd, my go-to song is…

DJ Johnny B: Jay-Z – “Public Service Announcement” or LMFAO – “Shots”.  It depends on the crowd.

(Dance break, kids. Watch/listen at your own risk. Foul language and stuff).

TAC: With the New Year coming up, what was your favorite new song you added to your set lists this year?

DJ Johnny B: Diplo – Express Yourself

(Ooh, dance break #3! Warning – lots of booty shaking)

TAC: You performed at 300 private parties within the last five years! What is the most memorable one?

Johnny B: Last year I did a party on New Year’s Day for several NFL players.  There were also several service industry people there as this was an “off” night  At 2 a.m. when the venue closed, one of the players got an owner of an afterhours venue to open up.  He moved the entire party a block over and we kept it going until that venue had to close.

TAC: What is a day in the life of DJ Johnny B like?

DJ Johnny B: These days I’m busy!  I spin every Thursday, Friday and Saturday and some Wednesdays and Sundays as well. During the day, I’m back in school to be an X-Ray tech.  That occupies my day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.  I walk my dog 2 miles every day and I run 5 miles every other day.  I’m boring.  I’m just a regular guy.

TAC: No! We totes appreciate normalcy! Where do you hope to be in ten years?

DJ Johnny B: I hope to be booked for 2 years out on private parties and still doing the high profile venues in the area.  Hopefully I’ll have some kids by then too!  If I do, I’m sure I’ll be coaching sports too.

That sounds nice. We like! Catch DJ Johnny B at The Pool After Dark at Harrah’s Resort this Friday starting at 10 p.m. Pricing starts at $10!
