Five days until Fat Tuesday, people. We are excited about this because Mardi Gras gives us another excuse to party and being the Mardi Gras hotel & casino, Showboat Atlantic City is the perfect place to celebrate. One of the best ways to celebrate Mardi Gras at Showboat is by attending the annual King Cake Eating World Championship.

Pat Bertoletti, a professional eater from Chitown, has won this competition for the past three years and will be returning to snag his fourth consecutive win on Tuesday. In 2012, he shoved down 10.5 lbs of King Cake in 8 minutes! He set this record in 2010. We’re excited to see if he will  be able to break it this year! In addition to being the King Cake champ, he also holds about 40 other World Records including two Guinness Book Of World Record titles for 13.5 ounces of ice cream in 30 seconds and 3 Mars Bars in one minute.

How is this possible? We sat down with Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti for the scoop! Check out the interview, below.

Pat working it in 2012.

TAC: How did you become a professional eater?

Pat Bertoletti: I became a professional eater after a lifelong addiction to food and overeating. I was pushed into it by my twin sister to enter my first event.

TAC: How did you get your nick name, Deep Dish?

Pat Bertoletti: I’m from Chicago and pizza is probably my favorite thing on the planet, so it was a natural fit.

TAC: Do you train for these kinds of contests and develop strategies? Or is it just as simple as trying to shovel in everything you can?

Pat Bertoletti: I do train. During the day I just drink a lot of liquids to keep my stomach stretched out. Strategy is very important. I’ve done this competition for three years, so I know how to eat the King Cake, but for most competitions, if I’m unfamiliar, I will practice. It’s good to go in with a game plan.

TAC: You’ve won the King Cake Eating Competition here at Showboat Atlantic City three years in a row and are coming back for a 4th. What do you credit these wins to?

Pat Bertoletti: I’ve been to New Orleans so many times and I love coming to Atlantic City to do the contest, I just really want to win. It’s kind of an odd food, so I do best in those types of competitions. It’s something you can’t really train for. You can’t train with the food because it’s hard to get and I’ve done so many different events that I just have an advantage. I know how to eat it very fast.

TAC: You’ve set World Records with so many different kinds of food from jalapenos to ice cream. What kind of eating competition will you absolutely not participate in?

Pat Bertoletti: I will try anything at least once. There are some foods I have records for that I don’t really like. It’s not really a question of liking it or not, it’s a question of eating fast. Pickled jalapenos, I don’t really like. And raw oysters are very difficult to eat, but I still do those contests.

TAC: Do you have any pre-competition rituals or superstitions?

Pat Bertoletti: I try to get up early. I try to drink a lot of water in the morning to stay hydrated and get ready for the contest.

TAC: What is your daily diet and fitness schedule like when you’re not competitive eating?

Pat Bertoletti: I’m kind of a bum. Now that it’s winter in Chicago, it’s really cold, but I try to ride my bike everywhere if it’s nice weather. As far as eating goes, I try to do the opposite of what I do in competition because I love food, so it’s very difficult for me all the time. I have to watch what I put in my body.

TAC: You have some amazing and unique recipes listed on your website. What is your favorite food?

Pat Bertoletti: I do love pizza. I really love Mexican food, but I love all food really.

TAC: What about to cook?

Pat Bertoletti: It changes about every two weeks, but I like reinterpreting classical flavors. Heavy, rich, fatty and salty things, I really like.

TAC: Too funny! What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Pat Bertoletti: I did go to culinary school. I have a Bachelors degree.

TAC: Very cool! Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Pat Bertoletti: I hope I’m not eating anymore. I’ve been working at catering companies for the past five years and I’m trying to get back into restaurants. I’m trying to launch a food truck in Chicago, so hopefully I’ll be doing that.

TAC: What would be your dream job?

Pat Bertoletti: If you asked me this when I was nineteen, I would have said competitive eating. Now it would just be having my name out there and cooking for people.

We have no doubt this will happen and will definitely keep an eye out! Come cheer on Pat and the other dozen or so competitive eaters in the King Cake Eating Championship at The House Of Blues Party Pit at Showboat Atlantic City on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. It should be a time to remember! Fat it up on Fat Tuesday!
