In the late 1980s, it was hard to miss Tiffany. The one-named teenage pop sensation reached the top of the charts with her hit single “I Think We’re Alone Now” and embarked on a nationwide tour in which she performed at shopping malls all across America. On April 13th, Tiffany will be performing at The Concert Venue at Harrah’s Resort as part of Totally 80’s Month!
We had the chance to speak with the teen queen of the 80’s mall scene to discuss what it was like to be a young pop star in the 80’s, her famous mall tour, and what we can expect to hear from her in the future.
Atlantic City Blog: Starting from the very beginning, when did you first get interested in music?
Tiffany: When I was about 2 or 3, with commercials on TV. I seemed to easily learn them and sing them around the house, so it started with me just repeating commercials. By the time I was 9, is really when I started to sing out to other people that weren’t family, and that was really just the prompting of my parents’ best friends. They were musicians themselves, and they really encouraged my parents to take me serious after hearing me sing.
ACB: What made you decide to cover Tommy James and the Shondells’ “I Think We’re Alone Now”?
Tiffany: That was the producer, George Tobin. It was one of his favorite songs, he pulled that out, and it’s been with me ever since! I don’t get tired of singing that song, I’m very grateful for it! I do it in all of my shows, and I have fun with the song. After it being in my life for so long, I’ve done it a couple of different ways, and it’s a great song! It makes people feel good.
ACB: When it came out, did you have any feeling that it was going to blow up the way that it did?
Tiffany: No, not really. I was just along for the ride, having fun, going to the studio, recording and living my dream. Did I think it was going to be a worldwide success? No, I don’t think I could ever have foresaw that at all. When it started happening and I was on planes and going to other countries, it made a big impression on me.
ACB: Back then, you were pretty much the poster child for the whole mall scene in the 80’s with the mall tour, which is honestly still such an interesting idea. How did that come to fruition?
Tiffany: They had me going to nightclubs at 15, and the songs went really well, but I couldn’t even stay in the club to meet any of the fans. Plus, there was an age gap there. So the label was just going to shelf the project because they were like, “We don’t know how to promote this.” It was my A&R guy who took his daughter to the mall one day and thought, “Why not have her sing at malls? They have hair shows and pageants, why not have music?” And it totally made sense, and it worked!
ACB: I know that eventually led to you touring with New Kids On The Block, what were they like?
Tiffany: Awesome! They’re great! Making the decision to bring them on the road was basically a no-brainer for me. When they came to audition to be an opening act for me, I put them on that night! I didn’t have an opening act, and they were talented and five hot guys, and sweet, I mean they’re really nice guys, and I knew it was a good fit.
ACB: Your new album, A Million Miles, was also your first step into producing, right? What was that experience like?
Tiffany: I’ve been doing a lot of production behind the scenes, but I didn’t feel comfortable with putting my name on it because I felt like I was still learning. So with this one, I came into Steven and said “I want to be co-producer, I have a lot of ideas.” And Steven was awesome, he was like, “I’ve been waiting for you to step up to the plate! You’re really behind the scenes all the time, and I think it’s time for you to come out of hiding.”
ACB: What can we expect to hear from you coming up?
Tiffany: I’m going to be touring extensively for the new album, and internationally touring as well, because I wasn’t really open to that for a long time, but it’s something that I want to do now. So I’m getting a lot of those dates on the books, and there are talks of doing some dance projects which is something that I love to do.
There is something about the positive and upbeat attitude of Tiffany and her music that just makes you want to get up and dance, and you have the chance to do that on April 13th!
