The gambling Gods were shining down on Ryan Riess yesterday. At just 23 years old, Riess has been crowned the king of poker, winning the World Series of Poker Main Event at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino to the tune of $8.36 million. (He also gets some snazzy new bling: a famed WSOP gold bracelet worth $500,000 and designed by Jason of Beverly Hills.)

It was the Michigan University grad’s first time playing the WSOP’s main event, as he’s only been on the poker scene since this time last year, when he finished as the runner up in a WSOP Circuit event. Since the WSOP began in July, he has been able to outshine all 6,351 of his competitors, and proved to be the victorious last man standing after Tuesday night’s $10,000 buy-in for No Limit Hold ‘Em. With a final play that lasted more than three hours, Las Vegas-based Jay Farber came in second place, winning more than $5 million. Show me the money!

“This is a dream come true,” said Riess after the big win. “Ever since I saw Chris Moneymaker win this event in 2003 I knew it was something I wanted to experience too. I’m surprised it came so quickly.”

Riess is the sixth consecutive player to both be under age 25 and also be a poker professional.
