Caesars Palace pulled out all the stops on Aug. 24 to welcome legendary performer Rod Stewart as he begins a two-year residency at the famed Strip resort.
The welcome event took place at the hotel’s Garden of the Gods pool complex, complete with a flashy arrival by Stewart in a limo, synchronized swimmers (it’s Vegas, just go with it), 100 inflatable soccer balls (Stewart’s a big soccer guy), bathing suit models, a Roman emperor, an assortment of costumed maidens and other eye-pleasing diversions.
Rod Stewart kicked some autographed soccer balls into the crowd, and said a few words to excited fans.
He recounted the story of a conversation with his 81-year-old brother who, when Stewart told him he’d be performing at Caesars Palace, asked, “Aren’t you worried about all the waiters walking backwards and forwards, and people dining and clinking their glasses?” Back in the day, of course, the Caesars Palace showroom (called “Circus Maximus”) did, in fact, serve dinner. But the $95 million Colosseum is a whole new ballgame, with crystal-clear acoustics and no seat farther than 120 feet from the stage. Read more about the modern marvel that is The Colosseum.
At the welcome event, Stewart said, “This place [The Colosseum] is probably the greatest room in the world for an artist to appear.”
During the 2011 leg of his residency, “Rod Stewart: The Hits” will run through Sep. 11, then Nov. 3-20. Find out more, and catch Rod Stewart live at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.
We would be remiss if we didn’t provide a highly inadequate photo gallery of the welcome event. They are among the things, after all, that keep us award-nominated. Ahem.
