Headbanging Meets Harmony With Tenors of Rock at Harrah’s

Tenors of Rock features five male lead singers, but if you think they’re just another boy band, think again. These five British guys sing rock music in perfect harmony. Picture a combination of a Broadway (or in this case West End) musical and a rock concert.

The group has just signed on to a residency at Harrah’s Las Vegas, which will begin January 11.

The new production show features a full rock band (including members of “Rock of Ages,” which closes Jan. 1), a dance troupe and rockin’ music.

The Tenors of Rock take classic sing-out-loud rock songs from the ’60s through today and put a new twist on them. Don’t expect covers. Founding member Gareth Richards says the group “reimagines” the songs. “We take great songs that everyone knows and loves and adapt them and take them to another level.”

Richards says you can expect to hear things like “Sweet Child O’ Mine” mixed with “Living on a Prayer,” songs from KISS and Whitesnake, ballads like “Bed of Roses” and even Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Music of the Night” revamped with soaring guitars.

The group also likes to do songs from Queen, Aerosmith  and other groups known for their big harmonies. The songs didn’t always translate well from the studio to live performances because those groups only had one lead singer. “We have five lead singers so we can bring those big harmonies,” said Richards.

Richards, along with other group members Dai Richards, Jimmy Denning, Jonathan Williams and Tommy Sherlock, were all friends and working in London when he had the vision for creating the rock vocal group.

Richards, who was brought up listening to classic rock, wanted to create something different from the many other tenors groups and doo-wop groups out there and Tenors of Rock was born. “We’re just five guys who love rock music,” said Richards.

The group started out touring in Europe in 2013 playing everything from the London Olympics to European Bike Week. They got a big break when they made it to the finals in the primetime TV talent show “The X-Factor UK.”

The group also spent some time in Las Vegas a few years ago playing various gigs around town and trying to get their name out there. They did a guest spot in “Raiding the Rock Vault,” opened for Frankie Moreno and played a few shows at the Palms.

It was only a matter of time before they got their own show here in Las Vegas. Richards said the group is looking forward to becoming part of the Vegas community.

“We’ve toured the world and this is our first opportunity to stay in one place and build a brand. We’re trying to get people to come and see what we’re all about. When they do come, they will fall in love with it.”

Tenors of Rock Las Vegas will perform at Harrah’s Las Vegas Wednesday through Sunday at 8 p.m., and will be dark on Monday and Tuesday. Tickets range from $35 – $99 plus taxes and fees.
