What in the World is Wrong With People?
There were a lot of exciting things going on in Vegas on Friday night (July 8). This blog forewent (yes, it’s a real word) all that and attended an eating contest at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill at Harrah’s Las Vegas.
The epic (and occasionally disturbing) gathering was one part celebration of Toby Keith’s birthday (the aforementioned July 8), one part charity event (a very small part) and one part, “What in the world is wrong with people?”
The contestants took on the daunting task of devouring 100 ounces of food, including a two-pound hamburger and 16 ounces of fries. And beer, lots of beer.
Those in attendance had a blast, although we’re not sure we can say the same for the participants. That’s a lot of ounces.
Ten percent of the six contestants’ $50 contest entry fee will be donated to nonprofits Opportunity Village and the Toby Keith Foundation. Don’t do the math. This isn’t about math, it’s about watching people test the boundaries of human determination! Or something.
After what felt like 14 hours, a winner emerged: a weak-kneed Travis Donovan (below) of Half Moon Bay, California. Among his rewards, Travis got to have his photo taken with several “hotties.” No, really, they have “hottie” right on their shirts. They’re called “Hotties.” We don’t make up the news.
According to our insider sources (some guy in a suit at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill), only about five percent of customers who attempt it actually complete the “100-Ounce Challenge” on a typical night.
Congratulations to all the contestants! Including the second-place finisher who received, among other things, a gift certificate for dinner at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill. ‘Nuff said.
This just in: See Toby Keith (and Eric Church) live at the Red Rock Amphitheatre (about 20 minutes from the Strip) on Aug. 8.
