By the end of May, it will be summer. Well, not technically, but Memorial Day always proverbially signals summer in the US, and here in Las Vegas, we’ve been “summering” for months already.

May is a month filled with holidays – Cinco De Mayo, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day – and events and celebrations surrounding those days. Here are our May Must Do events, shows, activities and more:

May 1 – 7

Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club

There’s a brand-new place to get your laughs on The Strip. Famed late-night talk show host and Las Vegas native, Jimmy Kimmel, opens his namesake comedy club at The LINQ Promenade. Opening weekend – May 2 – 5 – brings Harland Williams, the offbeat star of films including “RocketMan,” to showcase his wares.

Violent Femmes at Brooklyn Bowl las vegas

One of folk punk’s most famous bands takes the stage at Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas on The LINQ Promenade as Gordon Gano, Brian Ritchie and companu bring their unique sounds to Sin City. From the ever danceable “Blister in the Sun” to the fist-pumping anger of “Add It Up,” the experience of seeing one of this country’s great punk outfits perform some of their biggest hits is one for the books.

Finally, an excuse to party in Las Vegas. This year, the affectionately nicknamed “Drinko De Mayo” takes place on a Sunday so we’re expecting a lot of work call-outs Monday morning. There are plenty of Cinco de Mayo specials going on throughout the weekend.

“Winter, spring, summer or fall. All you’ve got to do is call…”

And you’ve got a friend in James Taylor. The folk singer brings a catalog of music of more than 50 years to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. “Sweet Baby James” has, in this residency, been playing such favorites as the above referenced “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Your Smiling Face” and “Fire and Rain” in a setlist made for the fans. Taylor’s extended run plays through May 11.

Presented by “Bon Appétit” magazine, Las Vegas turns into even more of a foodie destination May 9 – 12 as a gaggle of the world’s finest chefs convene for parties, tastings and cooking demos during Vegas Uncork’d. Events include Yo Cuz! An Italian Afternoon with Steve Martorano, Rao’s Italian Brunch with The Rao’s Family and The Grand Tasting, which takes place May 10 from 7 – 10 p.m. at the Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis at Caesars Palace. Fred Armisen at Brooklyn Bowl

The “Portlandia” star and former “Saturday Night Live” cast member does more than just act. He is also the bandleader for The 8G Band, the house band for “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” Armisen used to be a punk drummer in his earlier years. Those who know the quirky funnyman’s brand of humor know that he goes for the minutiae, so even if you don’t get everything, you’ll probably get enough to laugh at this show titled “Fred Armisen Comedy for Musicians But Everyone Is Welcome.”

Mark it on the calendar right now. “Do not forget to take Mom out to do something special on May 12.” Celebrate the woman who birthed you with a nice outdoor meal at these places before it gets too hot. All hail Queen Celine as she takes back her righteous throne at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on May 14. Nobody has redefined the Las Vegas residency like the Canadian songstress and the power of her performance is something that must be seen and heard to be believed. Her final run of shows ends June 8.

2 Chainz and French Montana at Drai’s Nightclub

Drai’s Nightclub at The Cromwell is the place to be for hip hop heads as Georgia rapper 2 Chainz takes over the club on May 17. Fans can expect all of the Southern star’s hits including “It’s A Vibe,” “Rule The World” and “Mercy.” On May 18, the night belongs to Moroccan born rapper French Montana. This night will, no doubt, be “Unforgettable.”

The party goes all weekend long as Electric Daisy Carnival invades Las Vegas. EDM, dub-steb, house and deep house vibes will be prevalent throughout the city. So will insane costumes. For those who can’t make it to the festival but still want a taste, superstar DJs Martin Garrix and Zedd will be dropping beats at OMNIA Nightclub at Caesars Palace, the former on May 17 and the latter on May 18.

An Evening with Johnny Marr

We can all dreams of a Smiths reunion. But, while it doesn’t seem like Mozz and Marr will be playing together anytime soon, at least we still have them both playing on their own. The former guitarist of the seminal first wave group brings his slicing, incisive stringed instrument work to Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas at The LINQ Promenade on May 18, where the audience will find out that “Bigmouth Strikes Again.”

The biggest card game in the world, the World Series of Poker, begins on May 28 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Go “all in” with the multitude of competitors all vying for that gold bracelet and instant legendary status among the card-playing greats.
