Stretch out those thighs, hamstrings and calves because the Geico Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon is ready to take over the Las Vegas Strip, bringing with it runners, supporters and lots of specials. Oh and did we mention that supermoon that will be visible Sunday night into Monday morning?

So lace up your Sauconys because we’ve got a lot to cover.

Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Las Vegas Strip

Road Closures

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon (and its 10K and half marathon) is the only race to take place on the Las Vegas Strip. Events start on Nov. 12 but the big races are Sunday, Nov. 13. That means road closures. If you’re a participant, supporter or just a random visitor wondering who all those people in shorts are, here’s what you need to know about driving on and near the Strip:

  • The southbound side of the Las Vegas Strip from Flamingo Road to Spring Mountain Road will be closed beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday.
  • Additional portions of the Strip will close between noon and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Strip will be completely closed by 2:30 p.m. It will re-open in phases starting at 7 p.m. and be completely opened by 2 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14.
  • The road closures are not confined to the Strip, so check out these handy lists to be prepared.
  • During the race, the easiest way for pedestrians to cross the Strip is to use the pedestrian bridges located at where Tropicana Avenue, Harmon Avenue, Flamingo Road and Spring Mountain Road intersect with Las Vegas Boulevard.

Pre-Game

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon has a slew of entertainment lined up for the race weekend including: Ozomatli (Nov. 11), The Walter Show (Nov. 12), Kissed Alive (Nov. 12), Snoop Dogg (Nov. 13) and various acts along all the race courses. Plus, this is Vegas, so we have world-class shows in hotels up and down the Strip, whether you need to “Work B**Ch” with Britney Spears to get your heart pumping or you want to make those post race aches disappear watching the magic of Mat Franco. And if you still believe in carb-loading before a race, we’ve got plenty of pasta spots for you.

Where to Watch

Our favorite way to enjoy the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon is relaxing with a drink in Beer Park at Paris Las Vegas. What can we say, we’re relaxers not runners, but we still want to cheer on those who take up the challenge. Beer Park’s outdoor second floor location provides perfect views of the race, a hefty selection of beer and plenty to nosh on while you’re cheering on your favorite runner.

Post Game

It’s all about recovery and relaxation after the race. Luckily there’s a Las Vegas spa steps from the race’s finish to help you with that. Runners at the Finish Line VIP Party can enjoy complimentary massages under the Vortex at The LINQ Hotel & Casino. If you’re not doing the VIP experience you can still enjoy discounts on special massage treatments for runners at The Spa at the LINQ, Flamingo Spa and Bally’s Spa.

Oh, and remember that supermoon we mentioned? Here in Vegas, one of the best times to see it will the night of Nov. 13 into the morning of Nov. 14. So after you finish up with the race, stay up all night and morning celebrating and be on the lookout for the giant moon reaching its crest at 5:52 a.m. You’ll then be able to hashtag your Vegas photos #stripatnight and #supermoon.

About The Author

I'm one of a rare breed of folks, a native Las Vegan. Being born in Las Vegas has endowed me with crazy Sin City skills - must be all the exposure to neon. I'm a human casino GPS, celebrity locator (You never know who you'll meet in a casino elevator, right Richard Branson?) and insider tip encyclopedia. I learned probability and statistics with casino dice. When I walk through a hotel, tourists think I work there. Maybe it's my smile, my purposeful walk or my friendly answers. Maybe it's just the black suit. But whatever the reason, I get the chance to exercise my Vegas super powers every day. Now if I could just predict when Megabucks would hit...
