Las Vegas is always a good idea if there’s a reason to celebrate. New Year’s Eve? Check. A bachelor party? Check. Mexican Independence Day? Check. Las Vegas is one of the best places to party on Sept. 16, which is the day when Mexicans across the world commemorate their country’s independence from Spanish rule. We always roll out the red (and white and green) carpet for the Mexican Independence Day weekend with tons of Las Vegas shows from Latin music artists as well as plenty of food and drinks.  ¡Viva Mexico!

Official Opening Ceremony

Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace

The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace is where you’ll want to be for the official opening of Mexican Independence Day celebrations. The shops are partnering with InVEGAS Magazine for the festivities, which will start with a Mexican Consul bell ringing, followed by strolling mariachis and folkloric dancers. Guests can also qualify for special offerings from more than 60 retailers within The Forum Shops by visiting the InVEGAS hospitality and welcome desks, where they will pick up an official wristband. The event is free.

In addition, strolling mariachis and informal modeling featuring Mulberry, DKNY and Canali will take place throughout the weekend.

Mr. 305 takes over Planet Hollywood for two shows during the Mexican Independence Day weekend. He has sold more than 60 million singles worldwide so you’ll be sure to be shaking your stuff and singing along to all those familiar songs like “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho), ” “Timber,” “Give Me Everything” and “Time of Our Lives.” Tickets start at $39.

Enrique Iglesias

Sept. 16 – 17  at 8 p.m.
The Colosseum at Caesars Palace

Latin pop superstar Enrique Iglesias is one of the best-selling Spanish artists ever. He has sold more than 159 million records and has released 10 studio albums so he’ll have plenty of material to draw from for his show at Caesars Palace. Iglesias has had both Spanish and English hits like “Enamorado Por Primera Vez”, “Sólo en Ti,” “Para Qué La Vida,”“Bailamos,” “Be With You” and “Hero.” Tickets are priced from $39.50.

Marc Anthony

Sept. 17 at 10 p.m.
Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino

Marc Anthony brings a mix of his pop and salsa hits to Las Vegas for his show at Planet Hollywood.

Anthony is the best-selling tropical salsa artist of all time and is best known for his Latin salsa songs and his ballads, both in Spanish and English. Some of his popular hits include “Te Conozco Bien,” “Hasta Ayer,” “Nadie Como Ella,” “I Need to Know,” “You Sang To Me” and  “No Me Ames” with Jennifer Lopez. Tickets are $105 and up.

Dining and Drinks

What better way to celebrate Mexico’s independence than raising a margarita (or three) and eating some traditional Mexican food? Here are some spots where we’ll be toasting throughout the weekend:

Tequila Taqueria at BALLY’S LAS VEGAS

We like any place with tequila in its name and Tequila Taqueria doesn’t disappoint. They have 37 premium tequilas on the menu along with 10 Mexican beers.

You’ll want to eat something to soak up all of that booze, so start with the fresh tableside guacamole. Other menu items include tacos, enchiladas, fajitas and tortas. We also like the all-day breakfast with things like chilaquiles and huevos rancheros.

Cabo Wabo Cantina at Miracle Mile Shops

It’s always a party at Sammy Hagar’s dining and live music venue and it’ll be in full swing over Mexican Independence Day weekend. Cabo Wabo serves coastal Mexican and Tex Mex cuisine. Dig into things like a carnitas platter, cilantro jalapeno chicken and short rib beef barbacoa tacos.

Pair your meal with a tequila flight or some margaritas by the pitcher and be sure to sit on the Strip-side patio. It’s some of the best people-watching in town.

Nacho Daddy at Miracle Mile Shops

Nacho Daddy is a Tex Mex restaurant that’s a favorite with locals. They recently opened their first Strip location at Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile Shops.

As the name suggests, they serve some pretty awesome nachos. Try interesting varieties like ghost pepper chili, potato chip and spicy shrimp. You’ll also find street tacos, burritos and more.

There’s a menu full of margaritas and tequilas but if you want to go a little crazy, you have to try one of the scorpion shots. No, that’s not just some cute name for a potent drink. It’s a shot of alcohol that actually has a pickled scorpion floating in it and you’ll be expected to down it if you order one.

If you don’t have the guts, just grab one of the award-winning Daddy’s Margaritas. Bonus: If you mention this article at Nacho Daddy they’ll give you one for free. (One per customer, valid on Sept. 16 only and you must be 21 or older.)

This restaurant serves Mexican-inspired dishes with Guy Fieri’s Flavortown flair. Start out with grilled street corn or chile lime dusted chips and house-made salsas. Then move on to carne asada, chipotle pork, chicken mole and beef machaca. We also have to suggest the Trash Can Nachos, which are piled high with cheese, beans and either chicken, carne asada, carnitas or chorizo.

Wash it all down with tequila flights, margaritas and the Borracho Brain Freezes. We love the frozen horchata colada with rum, coconut, pineapple, vanilla and cinnamon. Just be sure to sip it to avoid the aforementioned brain freeze.

Carlos ‘n Charlies at FLAMINGO LAS VEGAS

The vibe here is like spring break all year-round so what better place for a party? Carlos ‘n Charlie’s has a large outdoor patio overlooking the hotel’s pool area. It’s the perfect spot to sip margaritas and frozen drinks served up from flair bartenders. The wait staff might join in on your party too. You never know when they’ll break out into a song or dance and you could get roped into a crazy competition by the DJ.

All that partying will make you work up an appetite and you can satisfy it with tacos, fajitas and barbecued ribs, chicken and shrimp.

MARGARITAVILLE at Flamingo Las Vegas

You know that this is a great place for margaritas – it’s right there in the name. You can get them by the glass, in a flight or even in a 45-ounce souvenir blender cup. We love the flavors like Last Mango in Paris and the Feelin’ Hot Hot Hot with habanero.

If you prefer your tequila outside of a margarita, you can order shots served with sangrita, a housemade spicy tomato based chaser and a lime wedge. And if tequila isn’t your thing at all, you can also find rum cocktails and fun frozen drinks like the Havanas and Bananas with dark rum, Bailey’s, crème de banana and coconut purée.

Hello, just wondering what pool in Vegas is fun for people around 35-40. Some of the pool parties are too annoying with the 20-year-olds. Thank you for any suggestions

    Hi Jo,

We have many pools that would be great places to relax and enjoy the surroundings. I recommend the Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis at Caesars Palace: clv_thingstodo_gardenofthegodspooloasis It has seven separate pool areas. Venus Pool is one of them and it can get a little more toward the pool club vibe but the other pools sound like what you’re seeking. The pools at Flamingo Las Vegas are also great environments for adults. The adults only GO Pool at Flamingo is a party atmosphere on the weekends and when there are performers/DJs but I’ve always enjoyed it then and during the week when things are quieter. The pool also features four blackjack tables and one craps table available from 11am-7pm on Thursday – Monday, if you would like to continue your gaming experience in the pool. Drai’s Beachclub at The Cromwell is open during the week and is a beautiful, tranquil escape. It also has performers on the weekend but during the weekdays it is very calm and peaceful. Look for a story going up soon on the Total Vegas Blog about the delicious lunch options there. I hope you enjoy your next visit to Vegas and let us know which pools you checked out!
